The goal of the Uruguay biorefinery project is to produce biodiesel and other products while revitalizing Uruguay's farming and agricultural community. Through a public-private partnership, the project promotes the cultivation of dedicated energy oil crops for biodiesel fuel while supporting Uruguay's commitment to the COP-26 Net Zero goals.
Uruguay has committed to achieving the New Zero Emissions Goal by 2050 and is a signatory on the global policy document at the COP26 Summit held in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 13, 2021. This project is a collaboration between Avalon and the Uruguayan government, as well as its primary oil company ANCAP. Our project not only addresses environmental concerns but also stimulates economic growth and social development in Uruguay and the rest of Latin American countries.
The Uruguay Biorefinery facility will produce ~40 million liters of biodiesel and an additional 40 million liters of renewable diesel in a separate facility, along with other coproducts and byproducts from dedicated energy crops, such as Camelina, Moringa, or other food processing and agricultural waste streams that are readily available in the processing region.
Our Uruguay biorefinery project is built around growing dedicated energy oil-seed crops for clean energy production. Avalon's objective is to adopt camelina sativa and other dedicated oil seed crops as a source of feedstock for biofuel production. Achieving this goal leads to the emergence of new industries in the local and regional economy--which not only will generate employment opportunities but also offer an alternative to farmers who previously cultivated coffee—an ailing crop in the region. The Avalon approach is specifically customized for every location and project, aiming to strengthen and optimize available infrastructure while building a sustainable future for Uruguay.
